Other favorite pastimes Marilyn enjoyed were selling Mason shoes, selling seed corn and beans, hauling gravel, playing cards and games, and her most favorite, music. She taught herself to play the piano, accordion, violin-uke, banjo, and guitar and played the coronet in the high school band. Playing in local jam sessions with family and friends and playing and singing around for the community and church was something Marilyn really enjoyed.

Marilyn accepted Christ as her savior as a young women in the Ellston United Methodist Church, where she was a member, and then reaffirmed her commitment to Christ in the Regular Baptist Church in Mount Ayr in 1994.
