DEATH CLAIMS CIVIL WAR VETERAN

S. T. WALLACE, Resident of County 44 Years,
Dies at Age of Eighty-three.

Samuel Thomas WALLACE, son of Robert Brown WALLACE and Jane (NORRIS) WALLACE, was born June 8, 1849, in Guernsey county, Ohio, and died at his home near Benton, Iowa, on August 31, 1932, at the age of 83 years, two months and 23 days. He had three sisters and three brothers, all of whom preceded him in death.

He was reared on a farm near Fairview, Ohio. Enlisting in March, 1864, in Company F, 15th Ohio Volunteers [Infantry], when he was not yet 15, he saw service under General SHERMAN in the Atlanta Campaign, taking part in two important battles and several lesser engagements. A little later he took part in the defensive campaign under General THOMAS against General HOOD's army about Nashville, Tennessee.

After the civil war he attended college and taught in country schools. He then turned his whole attention to the study and teaching of music, in which he had always been greatly interested.

During twelve years, from 1876 to 1888, Mr. WALLACE was head of the music department of Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio. People who knew him then always speak of him as Professor WALLACE. To this work he gave himself unreservedly and built up a music department which became widely known. On account of failing health he resigned, in 1888, and soon located on a farm near Benton, where he lived until his death.

On February 3, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah A. SCOTT, daughter of W. I. SCOTT, formerly of Benton. In the immediate family there are left to cherish his memory his wife, three daughters and one son. The daughters are Lena, now Mrs. John DENHART, of Diagonal, Iowa; Madge, now Mrs. Glenn DIXON, of Mount Ayr, Iowa; and Esther, of Lenox, Iowa. The son, Chester, has been in charge of the farm during his father's declining years. A daughter, Edith, died in infancy. There are two granddaughters, Margaret DENHART, now Mrs. Harold TAYLOR, and Mildred DIXON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen DIXON. There is also a great-granddaughter, little Darlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold TAYLOR.

Reared in a United Presbyterian home, Mr. WALLACE was a member of that church during his earlier years and since locating near Benton, he and his family have been affiliated with the Methodist church.

Besides the immediate relatives, a large company, including neighbors and friends and people who were his pupils in earlier days, will be saddened by his passing, ans will be reminded of his kindly disposition, his genial smile, and the word of encouragement that he was so ready to give.

Funeral services for Mr. WALLACE were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church in Benton, being conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jesse JOHNSON, pastor of the Mount Ayr United Presbyterian church. The service was largely attended by neighbors and friends who came to pay tribute of respect to the memory of one whose exemplarylife was a blessing to the community for a period of 44 years.

Ringgold Post of the American Legion participated, a salute to the departed being fired at the grave and the impressive notes of taps, sounded by the bugler and director of the Ringgold American Legion band, marked the close of the services at the grave in Benton cemetery, where the body was laid to rest.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Blanch WOODS, Ottawa, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Frank SCOTT, Mr. and Mrs. Maje ANDREW and Pauline, Mr. and Mrs. Jay LONG, Mrs. Minnie MILLER, Creston, Iowa; Mr. Elmer BRYANT, New Virginia, Iowa; Mrs. Etta MEEHAN, Mr. Frank DIXON, Gowrie, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. L. W. HAMPSHIRE, Lincoln, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. FARMER, Conway, Iowa; Rev. and Mrs. CRAFTS, Lenox, Iowa.

We are deeply grateful to our neighbors and friends for the kindness and sympathy graciously bestowed on the occasion of the death and funeral of our husband and father. We also wish to thank the American Legion for their part in the funeral services. - Mrs. S. T. WALLACE and family.

NOTE: Sarah A. (SCOTT) WALLACE, Samuel's wife, was born on Mary 28, 1871, and died on March 19, 1947 with interment at Benton Cemetery. Of Samuel and Sarah's children:

Lena S. (WALLACE) DENHART was born in 1892 and died in 1974 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, beside her husband John F. (1889-1969).

Sarah and Samuel's daughter Edith died at the age of three months and five days on June 25, 1894 with interment at Benton Cemetery.

Made Elizabeth (WALLACE) DIXON was born on October 19, 1895, and died on August 20, 1972 with interment beside her husband Otho "Glen" (1894-1971) at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.

Chester, son of Sarah and Samuel, was born in 1898 and died in 1975 with interment beside his wife Doris J. (1924-1961).

Samuel and Sarah's granddaughter Margaret (DENHART) TAYLOR was born in 1911 and died in 2001 with interment at Diagonal Cemetery beside her husband Harold (1902-1985).
