OBITUARY - ALLEN RICHARD "DICK" YASHACK

Allen Richard "Dick" YASHACK, 85 of Diagonal, Iowa, passed away October 17, 2008 at home in the presence of his family.

Dick was born December 10, 1922 in Mount Ayr, Iowa the son of Andrew Howard and Bessie May (STUCK) YASHACK. At age 3 years old the family moved to Lomax, Illinois for 1 year and then to Peoria, Illinois until the depression hit and they moved back to rural Mount Ayr. In the summer of 1933 the family moved to Diagonal where Dick resided the rest of his life.

Dick graduated from Diagonal High School in 1940 and worked with the Ringgold County Survey Crew until he enlisted in the service in September of 1942. He served with the 8th Air Force in England during WWII flying 11 missions. He was discharged from the service in 1945. On July 15, 1943 he was united in marriage to Marjorie J. DOWELL, daughter of Irvin and Edna DOWELL also of Diagonal. To this union four children were born, Janet Lynn, Ronald Allen, Marilyn Jean, and Shelley Andrew.

After returning from the service the couple lived with Frank KLEJCH on his farm south of Diagonal and Dick worked for the Dalbey Lumber Company in Mount Ayr. During September of 1948 they moved into Diagonal and he started his own wood working business. Dick was a craftsman with extraordinary ability. His talents are seen in many local kitchens, churches, and private homes. The family cherishes his many gifts made with loving hands.

In April of 1953 he applied for the Postmaster vacancy in the Diagonal Post Office, was named Acting postmaster and received the permanent appointment in May of 1954. He retired from the Postal Service in August 1980 and worked in the First State Bank from January 1981 through December 1985.

Throughout his lifetime Dick participated in several organizations. He was a member of the Mount Ayr Masonic Lodge for 50 years, the American Legion for 50 years, and the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club for 58 years. Dick was an avid golfer and played at every opportunity.

He loved the outdoors; hunting and fishing were additional pastimes. In retirement years Dick looked forward to a yearly family fishing outing in Minnesota.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marjorie, daughter Janet,(husband Thomas FORD), daughter Marilyn, (husband Steve WERNER), son Shelley Andrew (significant other, Virginia CAMPBELL); six grandchildren Troy FORD (wife Allison), Tracy FORD, Melissa STENBERG (husband David), Amanda WERNER, Brandon WERNER, and Kearey YASHACK; six great grandchildren, Korby FORD, Tanner FORD, Hattie STENBERG, Noah STENBERG, Elijah STENBERG, and Elliott STENBERG; two sisters Eileen LESAN, Virginia CARDAMON (husband Frank ); two sister-in-laws Mary STEVENS, Patricia SOBOTKA, (husband Wallace) and brother-in-law Don DOWELL (wife Evelyn); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Andrew YASHACK, mother and father-in-law, Edna and Irvin DOWELL, son, Ronald Allen YASHACK, sister, Marilyn Lee YASHACK ; four brother-in-laws Ivan DOWELL, Charles LESAN, R. B. STEVENS, and Don TRIMBLE and sister-in-law Betty TRIMBLE.
