OBITUARY - JAMES L. "ROY" GARD

1918 - 2005

PINE RIVER, MN -- James L. "Roy" GARD, age 87, died Monday, November 14, 2005, at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River. Funeral services were Thursday, November 17, 2005 at Willim-St. Onge Family Funeral Homes in Pine River with Reverend Judith CLARK-BOLLING, Pine River United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services were at the Norwood Cemetery, rural Pine River. Arrangements were with Willim-St. Onge Family Funeral Homes in Pequot Lakes.

Roy was born on August 24, 1918, on his family's farm near Diagonal, Iowa, one of ten children born to Harry O. and Mary Marie (KARSKEY) GARD. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. After receiving his education he went to work on the family farm with his father. In 1935, the family moved to a farm near Whitefish Lake. After farming near Whitefish Lake for a while, the family had lived in Backus and Pine River before moving in 1938, to their farm west of Pine River. Roy lived and worked on the farm until entering the care center in 1997. He enjoyed farming, fishing, trapping and gardening. He had been a member at the Whitefish Community Church and then the United Methodist Church in Pine River.

Survivors include his sisters: Martha LARSON, Nisswa; Ruth (Basil) BOWMAN, Cohasset; and Betty (Ken) RUDLANG, Pine River; sister-in-law Luella GARD, Pine River; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mildred ROSE and Nellie WYMORE; brothers: Robert, Charles, Harold and Ivan.
