OBITUARY - CHARLES W. "BILL" BURGHER

The funeral for Charles W. "Bill" BURGHER, 74, of Scribner will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner [NE].

He died Saturday, December 24, 2005, at his home in Scribner.

He was born January 18, 1931, in Redding, Iowa, to Pearl BURGHER and Mary (McCARTY) BURGHER. He graduated from Malloy (sic) High School in 1949 in Malloy, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-55 during the Korean War. He married Deloris E. CLINE on July 1, 1953, in Afton, Iowa. After his discharge from the Navy in October 1955, he worked for Eaton Metal Products in Omaha for a short time and then moved his family to Washington, Neb., where he was employed by Knudsen Oil & Feed for about nine years. The family moved to Scribner in 1969 where he managed the Supersweet Feed Supply and later owned and operated Burgher Agri Sales in 1979. In 1980, he began driving over the road as an independent truck driver. He drove first for Mikow, and then for Smithway Motor Xpress, headquartered in Norfolk. He retired from driving truck in 2000.

He was a past member of the Scribner American Legion. He was the emcee for the Dodge County Fair tractor pulls in the past.

Survivors include: his wife; three daughters, Mary (Mrs. Randall) DOUGLAS of Lincoln, Linda (Mrs. Philip) CARROLL of Liberty, Mo., and Brenda (Mrs. John) JOHNSON of Columbus; a sister, Doris DRAKE of Mount Ayre (sic), Iowa; three granddaughters and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and a sister.

The Rev. Linda NEWMAN will officiate Wednesday's service. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. His body is being donated to science following the funeral service.

Memorials have been established to Nebraska State Parks and Dead Timber Recreation Area.
