OBITUARY - WILLIAM JOHN BUCK

William J. BUCK, one of the early settlers of Ringgold county, died peacefully at the home in Washington township Sunday, December 2. He had been in feeble health for several years, during which time he was tenderly cared for by his children.

Announcment of the death of Mr. BUCK was received by citizens of the county in the spirit of reverence, for no man in the county commanded greater respect and no citizen has been through all the years more closely identified with the community's progress. He was a true christan gentleman and his long and useful life was a blessing to the community.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the United Presbyterian church in Mount Ayr, conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. S. GLADFELTER, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery [Mount Ayr, Iowa].

William J. BUCK was born in County Antrim, Ireland, of Scotch-Irish parents on March 2, 1839. His parents came to the province of Quebec in 1848; from there they emigrated to Mansfield, Ohio. In 1858, after the death of the father, the mother and son moved to Iowa, and the next year they took up land in Ringgold county. For a few months less than seventy years Mr. BUCK has lived on the homestead established a few miles north and west of this community.

His disposition was humble and retiring, and therefore these remarks should coincide with his wishes in speaking modestly of the activities of his long life. For thirty-eight consecutive years he taught school, two of them in the village of Mount Ayr. In the "seventies" he was county superintendent.

He was, with his parents, a member of the Convenanter church, but at the union of the churches to form the United Presbyterian church he became a member of the new organization. He wrote the petition asking presbytery to organize the Mount Ayr congregation, and in July, 1860, this organization was completed with fourteen charter members. He is the last of these fourteen to be called to the better world. Shortly after the congregation was added to the roll of presbytery, he was ordained an elder. In addition to his work in this church he was superintendent thirty-five years ago in the Bible school held on Sabbath afternoons in Wishard chapel.

On November 28, 1864, he was united in marriage at Chariton to Miss Mary E. WALLACE. Mrs. BUCK died in January, 1923, preceding him a little less than six years. His children are John W., Robert M., William B., of Colorado Springs; Mrs. Frank WARRICK, James S., Mrs. W. C. MILLER, of College Springs, and Samuel F. There are nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

On the Sabbath, December 2, 1928, Mr. BUCK passed away, aged 89 years and nine months. He had recently no last illness, there was no struggle; but in his accustomed chair he peacefully breathed his last. He died in the Lord.

NOTE: William John and Mary Elizabeth (WALLACE) BUCK were the parents of seven children: twins Robert Millican and John Wallace, born July 30, 1866, Robert died October 29, 1938, John died November 16, 1947, both interred at Rose Hill Cemetery; Mary Elizabeth BUCK; James Sumner BUCK, born March 16, 1874 and died November 16, 1963, interment Rose Hill Cemetery; Samuel Finley BUCK, born September 11, 1889 and died August 12, 1930, interment Rose Hill Cemetery; Margaret Ann BUCK; and William John BUCK, born December 28, 1898 and died July 19, 1977, interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
