Lee is a small village in the western part of Riley township, when this picture of the baseball team was taken. Lee consisted of a school, church, store grist mill and a very few residences.
NOTE: Lee operated at a post office from 1898 to 1908.
The orginal picture is owned by Don MOFFET. The years the team played and the total identification is controversial.
On the back of the picture is the date 1895. An identified picture in the Lamoni Chronicle gives the date as 1900. A ltter from Mrs. Homer TOWNSLEY in the Chronicle gives the date as 1920.
The identification in the Chronicle is as follows:
BACK ROW, left to right: John McCHESNEY, Homer TOWNSLEY, Claude SNETHEN and Alfred McCHESNEY.
FRONT ROW, left to right: Theodore BOOTH, Babe GROVER, John PAYNE, Will PETERSON, Will PAYNE, O. PETERSON.
Mrs. TOWNSLEY, whose husband was Homer TOWNSLEY, state that Claude SNETHEN is really Ob. SMITH and that Babe GROVER should be identified as Harry SMITH.
Lee was not in the "Nation but was near by.
If you think you can positively determine the year the picture was taken and positively identify the participants, notify the Ringgold County Historical Society.
The Society now has a negative of this picture and will provide you with a copy for 50 cents.
