In Response To: Help, finding 1876-1889 death certificates (Vicki Scearce)

Vicki, There are no death records in Iowa for 1876, but there would be for 1889 if the death was recorded. It was not mandatory to report or record a death in Iowa until 1920, so many were not. If you are looking for the actual death record, you would have to write to the Poweshiek County Recorder, PO Box 656, Montezuma, Iowa 50171. Tell them who you are looking for and for what reason, stating how you are related, and include a notorized copy of your drivers' license. They charge $15 for a "real" copy and $5 for a genealogy copy.
