EVELYN CHENEY, 83

Evelyn Duane Cheney, 83, of Deep River, Iowa, died Thursday, February 5, 1998 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were February 9 at United Church in Deep River. The Rev. Paul Stanfield officiated.

Mrs. Ellen Zimmerman was the organist for musical selections, "How Great Thou Art" and "Beyond The Sunset."

Casket bearers were Steve Van Zee, Rex Cheney, Jeff Cheney, Marvin Cheney, Tom Cheney and Wayne Cheney. Burial was in Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River.

Relatives and friends were invited to the Deep River Community Building following the graveside service for fellowship and lunch.

Duane was born November 30, 1914 near Deep River, the daughter of Herbert and Jennie (Hill) Pierce. She attended Grier Country School and graduated from Deep River High School.

On October 18, 1934, she married Kenneth Cheney in Morrison, Ill. To this union six children were born.

They lived on a farm near Deep River before moving to Kenneth's family farm in 1939. In 1974, they retired to Deep River. Kenneth died September 3, 1990.

Duane was a member of the Deep River Methodist Church and later, the United Church of Deep River. She was also a member of the Busy Bee Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four grandchildren, Crystal Lynn Cheney, Terry Ann Cheney, Trent William Cheney and Lonnie Cheney; one sister, Lena Fisch and three siblings in infancy.

She is survived by four sons and their wives, Kenneth, Jr. and Judy Cheney, Jim and Arva Cheney, Lee Roy and Linda Cheney and Richard and Jenny Cheney, all of Deep River; two daughters and their husbands, Dorothy and Don Van Zee of Cedar Rapids and Donna and Rob Benton of Guthrie Center; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Byers of Montezuma and Bessie Pollard of Osage; three brothers, Harry Pierce of Deep River, Farrell Pierce of Gibson and Boyd Pierce of Keswick and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Deep River Volunteer Fire Department or the United Church of Deep River.
