BETTY AHRENS
Betty Maxwell Ahrens, 86, of the Mayflower died Tuesday, May 18, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Bowman officiating. Organist will be Susan Todd, and vocalist will be Linda Jantz. Pallbearers will be Jody Ahrens, Charles and Rick Bonyata, Becky Lambert, Betsy Upchurch and Don Weatherwax. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.
The daughter of Robert and Mary Forsyth Maxwell, she was born Jan. 28, 1907, in What Cheer. She was a 1922 graduate of Thornburg High School. She received her associate degree form Graceland College and her B.S. from Drake University.
She was married to Delmar F. Ahrens Nov. 29, 1928, in Waterloo. She taught school in Beaconsfield, Chester Township High School, Webster, Gilmore City, Newburg and Grinnell, retiring in 1972.
Mrs. Ahrens was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, Delta Kappa Gamma, Poweshiek County Retired Teachers and the Iowa State Education Association.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol Beth Jeske of Ankeny and Marilee Bonyata of Lake City, Fla.; a son, David of Richalnd, Wash.; one sister, Mary Hinz of Boone; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers, three sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
