Harry ( Wally ) Wallace Mathes 1925-2004

Harry Wallace Mathes, 79, of rural Montezuma, IA, died Wednesday November 17, from injuries received in an auto accident. Funeral services were held at the Montezuma Methodist Church.

He was born February 16, 1925 in Oskaloosa, IA the son of Harry George and Elsie Viola (Blanchard) Mathes. He was a Korean War Army Veteran. Wally farmed all of his life south of Montezuma, was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and did a lot of volunteer work for the church and 4-H in earlier years. He also served on the Conservation Commission for several years. Wally was also a member of various saddle Clubs and the Farmers Union. He faithfully attended the Iowa State Fair and always enjoyed visiting with people.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Kim and David; and a sister, Ruth Lucas.

Wally is survived by his wife, Shirley and their family, Connie Jean Mathes of Montezuma, IA, Cathie June (Hector) Ochga of Harrisburg, VA, Jon Valentine Mathes of Pella, IA, and Carolyn Joy Mathes of Grinnell, IA; eight grandchildren, five great-granchildren and two on the way; five sisters, Babara Anderson of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Dorothy Blydenburg of Kansas City, MO, Frieda (Bruce) Slawson of Waverly, IA, Joy (Bill) Shwartz of Traverse City, MI, and Mary Margaret Feusner of Columbus, OH; brother, Wilbur (Wandy) Mathes of Walls, MS; brother-in-law Daniel Lucas of Sigourney, IA; sister-in-law Frances Cook of Belle Vista, AR; and numberous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

In charge of arrangements was Watts Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to his church or the Salvation Army.
