Velma A. Heinselman

Velma A. Heinselman, 88, of Grinnell, died Thursday, May 1, 2014, at St. Frances Manor in Grinnell.

A celebration of libe is 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. john Epperson and the Rev. Brian Chitwood officiating.

Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Madison Church of Christ, mailed care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell 50112.

Mrs. Heinselman was born Aug. 29, 1925, the daughter of John and Elsie Bachman Manning in Elma. She married Harry Leonard Heinselman Nov. 15, 1944, at the Methodist Parsonage in Austin, Minnesota. He died in 2003.

She was raised on the family farm near Bassett and graduated from Charles City High School with the class of 1943.

She worked as a nurse's aide in Elma while her husband was in the service.

The couple farmed in Floyd and Chickasaw counties until 1965.

The moved to Grinnell and owned and operated the A & W drive-in and Tasty Freeze until 1975.

She worked several years in the office of Dr. Sam Porter.

She assisted her husband refinishing furniture, painting and making rag rugs from a loom.

She enjoyed takins small trips with her husband, playing cards and singing at the player piano with friends.

She cared for her husband at home for 10 years after suffered a stroke. After his death, she volumteered at Grinnell Regional Medical Center for five years.

She assisted others in need by providing meals, transportation and visitation.

She enjoyed embroidery, needlepoint and making quilts for her family.

She loved and appreciagted the time spent with her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Madison Church of Christ near Brooklyn.

Survivors include three children, Dixie Decker and spouse Terry of Libertyville, Sue Hahn and spouse Bill of Marengo and Curt Heinselman and spouse Kay of Kellog; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Hatzky; and two brothers, Donald and Melvin Manning.
