JOAN ANN BROOKMAN STAGNARO

Services are Monday for Joan Ann Stagnaro, who died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 56.

Mrs. Stagnaro was a native of McCamey, Texas, and moved to Santa Cruz in 1942. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1950 and married Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro in 1953.

In 1973, Mrs. Stagnaro provided police a description of a car that led to the apprehension of Herbert Mullin, who was later convicted of 10 murders. Mrs. Stagnaro called police after noticing a neighbor lying on the sidewalk as a car sped away. Her description led police to Mullin, who was pulled over and arrested a few minutes later.

She is survived by her husband, Robert "Big Boy" Stagnaro; three sons, Malio John Stagnaro, William Stagnaro, and Dino Stagnoro; her mother, June (Affolter) Womble; her brother, Charles Brookman, all of Santa Cruz; her sister, Nancy Ross of Incline Village, Nev.; and two daughters, Leita Stangaro of Hayward and Laura Stagnaro of Santa Cruz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church, 125 High St. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Norman's Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Dr., Soquel. Private interment will be in Holy Cross Mausoleum.

Contributions to Dominican Hospital Long-Term Care, 1555 Soquel Dr., Santa Cruz, are preferred.

NOTE: Joan Ann (Brookman) Stagnaro is the granddaughter of Charles A. Affolter, who is buried in Brooklyn, Iowa.
