TOBY MATHERLY

Toby Matherly, age 79 of Houston, Texas and formerly of Grinnell, died on Sunday, August 19, 2018 in Houston. While his family is saddened and will miss him, they find great joy in knowing he has been reunited with his wife, "Shoony," where they will be together for eternity.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 24th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell and a reception will follow at the Grinnell Eagles Club.

Memorials may be designated to the Toby Matherly Memorial Fund, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family online at www.smithfh.com.

Toby (Orval) Louis Matherly was born in Grinnell, Iowa on September 25, 1938 to Dorothy and Bernard Matherly. He married the love of his life, Sharon "Shoony" Lucille Galbraith on September 17, 1957 in Grinnell. They had four children: Lori Woods of Crosby, Texas; Jeff (Frances) Matherly of Lumberton, Texas; Lisa (Mike) Rynearson of Alvin, Texas; and Jody (Laura) Matherly of Iowa City, Iowa.

After working and raising their family in Defiance, Ohio and then the Swartz Creek, Michigan area, Toby and Sharon moved to South Houston, Texas. Toby was employed by Azrock Industries for 20 years before retiring.

Toby's hobbies varied, depending on where they were in life. Throughout the years he enjoyed camping, golfing, and traveling. After retiring, he and Shoony developed a love for the casinos that continued until the day he passed. He became known as "one quarter Toby."

Toby is survived by his children; his sister, Mary (Kenny) Volner; brothers, Terry (Jeannie) Matherly and Glenn (Carol) Matherly; sister-in-law, Jake Minear; brother-in-law, Tim Galbraith; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Sharon in 2009.
