The Grinnell (IA) Herald
Apr. 26, 1895

--After an illness extending over several years Mr. W.H. Lanphere passed away Monday evening. For a long time he had been failing day by day, slowly but surely. But with the tenacity of one who had lived an active, busy life, he clung to old associations and friends, frequently walking down to the business part of the city. Though feeble, he seemed to realize it little and but a short time ago made an extended visit to his old friends and to his children at Ladora. W.H. Lanphere was born in Seneca Co., N.Y., May 24, 1830. June 14,1849, he was united in marriage with Esther G. Canfield at Waterloo, N.Y. With six children she survives him, all of whom were present at the funeral. In 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Lanphere came to Scott Co., Iowa, and in 1883, they came to Grinnell. Mr. Lanphere was a traveling salesman in Iowa for twenty-five years, serving seventeen years of the time in the employ of Van Patten & Marks of Davenport. Mr. Lanphere lived an active, busy life, a genial man, a good citizen and a man of the highest integrity whom to know was to respect. He lived to see his children grow up into lives of usefulness, honored, and respected as he had been before them. In his death Grinnell loses an enterprising, upright citizen, and much sympathy is expressed by our people for the bereaved relatives. The funeral service was held at the home of H.F. Lanphere Tuesday at two o'clock p.m., conducted by Prof. L.F. Parker, Messrs. W.A. Little and A.C. Harriman, Mrs. Christian and Miss Mary Mack assisting in the music. The body is at rest in Hazelwood.
