EUGENE W. CAMPBELL, 88

Eugene W. Campbell, 88 of Grinnell, died May 16, 2016, at his home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 24, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Pallbearers were Jayden Brown, Todd, Jason, Jarred, Lilly and Bruce Campbell, Teagan Crady and Kevin "Bodie" King. Honorary bearers were Jerry Baltisberger, Ron Heishman, Vern Jarvela, Larry Manning, Gene May, Russ Sadler and Jim Schultz. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation was held Monday at the funeral home with the family present Monday evening.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Eugene W. Campbell Memorial Fund.

Gene was born December 21, 1927, in Marshalltown, the son of Stewart and Clara Dost Campbell. He was a 1945 graduate of Newburg High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

On November 11, 1950, he was united in marriage with Byrna Jean Doud, in Newton. The couple lived in Grinnell where he owned and operated C&K Transfer for over 65 years.

Gene was a member of the Grinnell Elks, where he was a recipient of Elk of the Year, Grinnell Odd Fellows, the Eagles Club, and the Lions Club. He was also a member of the Iowa Truckers Association and recognized by the Iowa Transportation Museum in Grinnell. He was very active in the Grinnell Community as a supporter of Grinnell athletic teams and through various business organizations.

Gene was beloved by his family and friends. He was a prominent business person and held strong ethical values. He was considered a good man by many and was not afraid to extend his hand to those in need. He enjoyed bowling and playing fast-pitch softball in his younger years.

Survivors include three children, Patricia (Steven) Cook of Fairfax, Michael (Annie) Campbell of Grinnell and Lori Campbell of Grinnell; five grandchildren, Todd (Denise), Jason, Steffanie (Mark), Amanda and Stephanie (Michael); ten great-grandchildren, Jarred, Lilly, Jayden, Teagan, Dorian, Arianna, Jamie, Mikaela, Bradley and Andrew; and one great-great-grandchild, Sammy; brother, Bill Irene) Campbell; brothers-in-law, Bill and Jim Doud and sister-in-law, Julie Doud. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2000; and one son, David.
