ELAINE KIRBY SERVICES HELD

Elaine M. Kirby, 68, of Malcom died of an apparent heart attack early Sunday morning at her home.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lawrence P. Fitzpatrick of the Malcom- Sheridan Parish officiating. Organist was Kathleen Ramsey, and pallbearers were Tim Hoien, Marvin Kolars, Dennis Maschmann, Jack Mitchell, Edison Sharp and Jack Wakely. Honorary beares were Ivan Allgood, Edward Barnes, Forrest Doty Jr., Frank Herbrandt and Phil Lamb. Burial was at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

The daughter of Ray and Gussie Stephen Johnson, she was born Aug. 3, 1913, near Montezuma. She graduated from Montezuma High School in 1931.

On June 23, 1934, she was married to Raymond H. Kirby at Kirksville, Mo. The couple farmed in the Grinnell, Sheridan and Malcom areas. Mrs. Kirby was active in 4-H clubs. Since 1940, the couple lived in and around Malcom. Mrs. Kirby was an aide at the former St. Francis Hospital and in recent years was a ward clerk at Grinnell General Hospital until her retirement two years ago. She was a member of the Malcom United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children, Karen Duncan and Dennis and Richard Kirby, all of Malcom, and Patricia LaKose of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; one foster grandchild; and her brothers and sisters, Doris Brown of Malcom, Farrell Johnson of Montezuma, Ina Mae Boyd of Brooklyn, Betty Harbert of Stockton, Ill., Marlys Hopwood of Deep River, Raymond Johnson of Toledo, Marveen Wilson of Webster, Gerald Johnson of Newhall and Louise Sanders of Springfield, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1968; a brother, Carmon Johnson, in 1980; and two infant sisters.
