ROGER HENKLE

Roger Henkle, 59, of Montezuma, a former member of the Poweshiek County Board of Supervisors, died of a stroke Saturday, Aug. 17, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted Aug. 21 at Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, with the Revs. Brian Carter and George Salnave officiating. Organist was Kathleen Ramsey, and soloist was Rhonda Minner.

Pallbearers were Danny Carroll, Bob Gorsuch, Bernie Vander Pol, Bill Hudson, Brent James and David Ferguson. Honorary bearers were K.W. Caldwell, Bill Bolen, M.O. Hansen, Rae Van Roekel, Loel Ferguson, Waldo Vannoy, Jo Wray, Dan Gardner and Michael Mahaffey.

Masonic rites were conducted by members of Lafayette Lodge No. 52 of Montezuma. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery.

The son of Henry and Ruth Traxler Henkle, he was born June 26, 1937, near Montezuma. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1955 and had been captain of the football team during his senior year.

He was active in the Future Farmers of America organization, receiving the Star Farmer of Iowa award in 1955. He received the American Farmer Degree in 1957. Mr. Henkle served in the U.S. Army Reserves at Oskaloosa.

On March 1, 1958, he was married to Sue McClain in Montezuma. He and his brother, William, farmed a farming partnership and farmed south of Montezuma. He later farmed a partnership in H&J Fertilizer in Montezuma.

He was a charter member of the Montezuma Flying Club and received his pilot's license. After dissolving the farm partnership, he worked for the Poweshiek County Secondary Road Department.

Mr. Henkle served two terms as a county supervisor, beginning in 1979. He also operated Poweshiek Trucking, and in 1986 he began driving for Warren Transport. In 1988, he began driving for WalMart until retiring last year.

He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and was active in Masonic circles. He also was a member of the Grinnell Elks Club and the Farm Bureau and was a former member of the Montezuma Jaycees.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Rande of Montezuma; two daughters, Robin Mann of Malcom and Heidi Thompson of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Ehret of Montezuma and Doris Van Arkel of Malcom; and one brother, William of Montezuma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Rhonda; and a sister, Eleanor Hicks.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Henkle's name may be made to the FFA scholarship at Montezuma High School or to Grinnell Regional Medcial Center.
