November 24, 1820 --- February 16, 1892

Mrs. Jane Duffus Cummings was born Nov. 24, 1820, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She came to the US in 1850 and two yrs later was married at Ashland, OH to Mr. Alex Cummings, who still survives her. In 1854 she moved with her husband to Iowa, where she "fell asleep" Feb 16, 1892.

At the age of (unreadable), she united w/the Presbyterian church in Scotland, transferring her membership to the Presbyterian church of this country when they came to America. She was the mother of four sons and two daughters, all of whom are still living,as is also true of her eleven grandchildren. At the funeral in accordance w/her own request, the four sons, a son-in-law, and a grandson acted as pall-bearers, and tenderly and lovingly carried the mother to her last resting place, as with children she had often carried them in her arms. She was buried in the cemetery at Ewart.

The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. John L. Gage, assisted by Rev. Felix Piekworth, of the M.E. church. Mrs. Cummings was a devoted mother, self sacrificing in the extreme, always happiest when children and grandchildren were around her. It never seemed a sacrifice or a trial to do good to others. Her children fondly recall her familiar talks and motherly advice, urging each to do right. Church attendance was a special privilege and pleasure, and her pastor was a friend.

In the delirium of her last illness, imagining it was Sunday, she said, looking on the bright sunlight. "What a beautiful day to go to church." To a son bending over her pillow she faintly whispered, "Trust in Christ, He is always with us." And her last words were, "Going home to Jesus." She suffered intensely during her last illness, but at the last moment, as the golden bowl was broken, pain subsided and gently, peacefully as on her Saviour's breast, a smile broke over her countenance, and at evening time it was light.
