Ed was born October 2, 1924, on the family farm near Grinnell, in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Margaret McKeag Hudnutt. He was raised on the farm and was a 1944 graduate of Grinnell High School. Following his education he began farming with his brothers in Poweshiek County.

On April 4, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Chyma, at St. Mary's Catholic in Grinnell. The couple continued farming on the family farm, soon to be a Century Farm, all his life. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Sully Co-op, and AARP.

Farming was his passion, working the ground, watching the field furbish, and raking in a harvest. He also took great pride in raising livestock and was very proud when he would place at various shows. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, and going to the casino in Tama. He loved being with his family and was very proud of his two grandsons. He enjoyed attending all of their activities while they were growing up. He never knew a stranger.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Hudnutt of Grinnell; one daughter, Peggy Guyer and her companion, James Viles of Grinnell; two grandsons, Douglas and Kyle Guyer, both students at Iowa State University in Ames; and one brother, Don Hudnutt of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lavert, Mike, Paul, and Oliver; one sister, Mary Dostal; and one nephew, James Hudnutt.
