Warren W. Johnson, age 82, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center with his family by his side. A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Jaan Braaksma, pastor of the Westfield Community Church, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home and the family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. Memorials may be designated in his name to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

Warren was born on June 24, 1929 in Brooklyn, Iowa to Alvin and Thelma Niswander Johnson. He was raised near Brooklyn and the family then moved to the family farm northeast of Grinnell. Warren graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1947. He honorably served in the United States Marines Corps from August 16, 1949 until August 16, 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Geraldine Reeves on February 14, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. To this union three children were born: Kenneth, Lyle and Teresa. On August 17, 1979, he was united in marriage to Beverly Icenbice in Grinnell. The couple resided and farmed near Grinnell. Warren also worked at DeLong's Sportswear in Grinnell for several years. In 1988, the couple moved to Cass Lake near Bemidji, Minnesota. He worked at the Iowana Resort for three years and then worked at Teal's SuperValu and the Fred Teal Farm, where he raised livestock and horses.

Warren was an outdoorsman who had a passion for farming and working with cattle and horses. His enjoyments were fishing and ice fishing, camping, and visits from his family.

Warren is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Beverly Johnson of Grinnell; his children, Kenneth (Donna) Johnson of Grinnell, Lyle Johnson of Grinnell, and Teresa (Dexter) Versendaal of Newton, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; his sister, Esther Loftin of Grinnell; and 6 step children, Mike Icenbice of Lynnville, Iowa, Steve Icenbice of Onalaska, Wisconsin, David Icenbice of Grinnell, Patty Icenbice of Searsboro, Iowa, Diane Icenbice of Boulder, Colorado, and Darlene Larson of Grinnell. Warren was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Geraldine; and his sister, Evelyn Olson.
