Richard W. Johnson, 69, of Papillion, Nebraska and formerly of Grinnell, Iowa, died on Friday, April 20, 2012, at the Hillcrest Country Estates and Cottages in Papillion. Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with Rev. Nick Adam, pastor of the church, officiating. Music will be provided by Marilyn Kriegel, organist and St. Mary's Choir. Casket Bearers will be George "Skip" Clement, Pat Fitzgerald, Tom Gallo, Tony Gallo, Steve Kenkel and John Little. A graveside service will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2012, at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and the family will be present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. A scripture service will be held 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. The Knight of Columbus will recite the rosary at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Parish Foundation or to the Knights of Columbus and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Richard was born on February 16, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska to Clifford and Martha Pokorny Johnson. He was raised in Omaha and graduated from Omaha South High School. Following high school he entered the United States Coast Guard. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Nebraska in 1974 and a post graduate degree from the College of St. Mary in 1975. He was married to Teresa Byrnes on February 7, 1970, in Omaha. The couple lived in Bettendorf, Iowa and he worked in Medical Records Department at United Medical Center in Moline, Illinois. He moved to Grinnell, Iowa in 1991 and served as Administrator of Medical Records at Grinnell Regional Medical Center until his retirement in 2009.

Richard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell and the Knights of Columbus. He was Past President of the Board of Directors of the former Stewart Library in Grinnell. His passion was service to his church and the community.

Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Johnson of Plano, Texas and Colleen Johnson of Virginia Beach, Virginia; three sisters, Jean (Lloyd) Mill of Bellevue, Nebraska, Linda Green of Omaha, Nebraska and Debbie (Chuck) Kriegler of Bellevue, Nebraska; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Steve Green.
