Mrs. Martha Townsend Passes Away

Mrs. Martha Townsend, widow of the late E. W. Townsend, passed away last Friday morning at her home in Decatur. Mrs. Townsend had been in Decatur being with her daughter, Mrs. Blanche Anderson, in Des Moines, during the winter. Illness came upon her recently and finally resulted in her death. Rev. C. B. Rayhill, pastor of the Methodist church, conducted the funeral service at Decatur Sunday with the Slade Funeral Service in charge. Burial was in the Decatur cemetery.

Martha P. Burrows was born at Searsboro, Iowa, March 31, 1860, and passed away at Decatur, Iowa, August 17, 1934, aged 71 years, 4 months, and 17 days. On August 19, 1871, she was united in marriage to Ernest W. Townsend, of Indianola, Iowa, who preceded her in death, Dec. 1, 1917. The early years of their married life were spent on a farm in Warren county, Iowa, from which they moved to Decatur, Iowa, in 1877. There Mrs. Townsend has since lived. Six children were born in this union, three of whom preceded her in death, Clarence B., Fred A., and Mrs. Carolyn Paul. The surviving children are Mrs. Blanche Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. O. F. Walker of Clinton, Iowa, and Bruce of Davenport, Iowa. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, and one great grandchild, and a brother, John Burrows, of Des Moines.

The deceased was converted and joined the Friends church in early life, while living in Warren county, but after coming to Decatur she transferred her affiliation to the Methodist Episcopal church. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church of Decatur, Aug. 19, by Rev. C. B. Rayhill. Interment was made in the Decatur cemetery.
