MARY ELLEN (JOHNSTON) WALTER

Mary Ellen (Johnston) Walter, 85, of Gering, Nebraska passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Emerald Court in Scottsbluff.

Her memorial service will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Center Cross Community Church in Gering with Pastor Michael Mead officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery. At her request, she was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church or to the family. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. Gering Memorial Chapel & Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ellen was born on November 9, 1926, in Bridgeport, Nebraska to Leo S. and Lila (Norris) Johnston. She graduated from high school in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Henry Walter on July 3, 1947, in Mitchell, Nebraska, and made their home in western Nebraska until settling in Gering.

She was a member of the Gering Baptist Church and the TOPS group. She worked at CO-OP for several years in the meat department and as a checker until she retired.

Survivors include her children: Margaret (Jerry) Hitchings of Rye, Texas, Marjorie (Dotz) Wilhelm of Gering, Marietta Graves of Gering and Tom (Barbara) Walter of Fredericksburg, Texas; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; sister, Barbara (Keith) Rice of Colorado Springs, CO; brothers, Clifford (Connie) Johnston of Cheyenne, WY, and Duane (Lori) Johnston of Modesto, CA; sister-in-law, Joyce Johnston of Scottsbluff and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, Steve Wilhelm, granddaughter, Mary Geneva Hitchings; brothers, Bob (Erma) Johnston and Leo Johnston; sisters, Betty Metz and Hannah Johnston and friend, Curly Krawjewski.
