VERLA ANN TISH

Verla Tish, 84 of Gibson passed away Wednesday morning, November 1, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Gibson Presbyterian Church. Burial will be held in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation will begin after 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gibson Presbyterian Church or the Keswick First Responders. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Verla Ann Tish, the daughter of Cecil and Bessie (Lester) Bates, was born on August 25, 1933 south of Gibson, Iowa. She was a 1950 graduate of Deep River High School. She was honored to be a member of the Deep River State Tournament basketball team. On February 2, 1953, Verla was united in marriage to Marvin Tish at The Little Brown Church. To this union four children were born, Dennis, Diane, Doug and Dan. Marvin and Verla farmed side by side in the Deep River and Gibson area purchasing a farm near Gibson in 1961. Verla helped on the farm with milking cows, raising chickens and hogs, selling eggs and cream and caring for her many cats. She loved her big garden and did a lot of canning. She was a wonderful cook and loved mowing her yard. Verla attended Indian Hills College and obtained her CNA and Med aide license and worked at the North English Care Center for over 25 years. She also worked at Casey's and was requested by many to make their pizza. After the loss of Marvin, she and her family continued their family farm operation. She still chored every day and was devoted to her family. Verla loved attending the many sporting events of her grandchildren, camped at the Iowa State Fair for over 40 years, was an avid Cubs and Hawkeyes fan and was an all around people person.

Her memory will be cherished by her children, Dennis (Michelle James) of Thornburg, Diane (Lyle) Lamb of North English, Doug (Kelly) Tish of What Cheer, Dan (Marlys Smith) of Gibson; her grandchildren, Brook (Eddie) Lust, Allie Bain, Abbie (Doug) Schaffner, Alexis Lamb, Dakota Huber and Colton Butler; seven great grandchildren, Jaeden, Gracen, Taeven, Ben, Blake, Annamae and Dillon; brothers, Merle Bates of Ft. Worth, Donald (Elaine) Bates of Keswick, John (Joetta) Bates of Montezuma, Paul Bates of What Cheer, and many other relatives and friends.

Verla is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin; her brothers, Eugene Bates, Ronald Bates, Ned Bates, Tom Bates and Gerald Bates; her sisters, Agnes Hourihan, Dorothy Bates, Marlene Bates, Margaret Tarvin and Charlene Bates.
