FRANCES MAXWELL

Frances Maxwell, 85, of Deep River, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 25, at the United Church, Deep River. Officiating were Rev. Ken Ferguson and Rev. Chrisa Ferguson. Casketbearers were Rick Maxwell, Curtis Maxwell, Joe Armstrong, Terry Maschmann, Mike Clement, Brian Borwig, Matt Rieder, James Maschmann and Michael Maschmann. Burial was in Golden Rod Cemetery, Deep River. Arrangements were by Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma.

Memorials may be made to the United Church of Deep River or the Deep River Volunteer Fire Department.

She was born September 7, 1910, at Brooklyn, the daughter of Franklin and Effa Carlson Miller. She graduated from Hartwick High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school for seven years before her marriage. On May 22, 1938, she married Robert James Maxwell at her parents' home northeast of Brooklyn. To this union five children were born. They farmed near Guernsey and in 1944, they moved to their farm near Deep River. In 1986 they moved into Deep River. Robert died November 28, 1992.

Frances was a member of the United Church of Deep River and the Ladies Aid Society, the Deep River American Legion Auxiliary, Deborah Rebekah Lodge No. 202 of Brooklyn for over 50 years, and Farm Bureau and the 50 Plus Club. She had also been a 4-H leader and was a volunteer at the Montezuma Senior Home.

Frances is survived by her family: Richard and Eileen Maxwell of Virginia, Ill.; David and Kristin Maxwell of Gibson; Jeane Maschmann of LeClaire; and Ellen and David Zimmerman of Deep River; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Hurd of Omaha, Neb., and Lois Doty of Brooklyn; and other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, James in infancy in 1939; and three brothers, Theodore, Elver and Paul Miller.
