MRS. MILLER,
TEACHER HERE,
DIES TUESDAY

After an illness of several years, Mrs. A.D. Miller, longtime resident of Grinnell, passed away at her home, 1227 Park Street, about midnight December 14. After several months in the hospital she returned to her home where she has had the care of Mrs. Lillie Benskin.

Nellie Louise Pemberton was born in Marshall county July 16, 1870. Here she received her elementary education and went on to graduate from Iowa State Teachers College in 1900. She returned to teach in the Marshalltown public schools. September 14, 1904 she was married to A.D. Miller, a banker in Mitchellville. Mr. Miller preceded her in death July 7, 1925. In 1930 Mrs. Miller, attracted by the educational advantages offered by the public schools and Grinnell College, came to Grinnell with her four sons. She was soon enlisted as a teacher, first at Parker and then at Central School. In her twelve years of teaching here she made many lasting friendships among her pupils. Many of them called upon her during her illness and in other ways expressed their appreciation of her. She was one of those teachers who developed a deep interest in each of her students.

Mrs. Miller was a devoted member of the Congregational Church. She was a member of the Historical and Literary Club and in many other ways expressed an interest in community improvement. Through her teaching and other contacts she developed a wide circle of friends. Her major interest was in the rearing of her four sons. She had great satisfaction in them and in the homes they established. Her care of them has been returned many-fold by their devotion and that of their families.

Surviving Mrs. Miller are her mother, Bertha Pemberton of Marshalltown, her sister, Mrs. A.L. Sheldon of Bloomington, Ill., and a brother, Clinton Pemberton of Albion; the sons, Kenneth P. Miller of Hinsdale, Ill., Winston C. Miller of Creston, Claire F. Miller of Kansas City, Mo., and Wayne A. Miller of Des Moines; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held in the Congregational Church in Grinnell, Friday, Dec. 16, at 10:00 a.m. in charge of her pastor, the Rev. Leland W. Mann. Burial will be in the family plot in the Mitchellville cemetery.

James Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
