Funeral services for Russ W. Sawin Sr., longtime Grinnell resident who died Sunday morning at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the James-Schalinske Funeral Home.

The Rev. Leland Mann will officiate and organ music will be provided by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner. Graveside services will be conducted by the Grinnell Lodge No. 1266, B.P.O. Elks, and interment will be at the Riverside cemetery at Marshalltown.

Son of Isaac and Ida Brown Sawin, he was born at Moulton on Nov. 1, 1891. He married Mary Jane Anderson on Aug. 4, 1917, at Des Moines and she preceded him in death on March 22, 1953.

In 1935 he came to Grinnell and traveled for the Pratt Paper Co., and later worked at the Laros News Stand. He was also previously engaged in raising turkeys.

Mr. Sawin was a former member of the Grinnell City Council and was a member of the Congregational church, the Elks lodge, and the American Legion. He served with the United States Army during World War I.

He retired five years ago and for the past two months had made his home with a daughter at Oskaloosa. He as preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one daughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Leo Broerman of Oskaloosa, and a son, Russ Jr., of Des Plaines, Ill.; five granddaughters and one grandson; and one sister, Mrs. Nena Katt of Centerville.
