MYRON A. WHITE

Myron A. White, 88, of Grinnell died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 1, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Doug Smiley officiating. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

He was born on June 13, 1921, in rural Tama County to David Alexander and L. Nellie Lanning White. His family moved to Grinnell shortly after his birth. He was raised on the family farm southwest of Grinnell and attended the rural school near his home. He graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1939.

He served in the United States Army 325th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. His combat service included the Normandy invasion, Operation Market Garden in Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, and the occupation of Berlin.

He was united in marriage with Jean Katherine Garrigan on June 7, 1943, at the Santa Ana Army Air Force Base near Santa Ana, Calif. Following his service the couple returned to Grinnell. In 1946, they began farming in the Bethel Community southwest of Grinnell.

He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church and the Lynnville Friends Church respectively. He took his motor home, boat, and motorcycle to Kino Bay, Mexico, for five months each winter, where he enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and socializing with his many friends at Club Deportivo.

He is survived by his sons, Gary White of LaPorte, Colo., Douglas White of Ames, and Edward White of Keosauqua; two grandchildren; and his siblings, Norman White of Ankeny and Lyle White of Tama. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jean in 1987; his brother, Dale White; and his sister, Vivian Graham.
