FORMER GRINNELL MAN
DIES IN CALIFORNIA

George H. Brown Passes Away at His
Home in Corona, Calif., After
A Short Illness

It is with sincerest regret that the Herald has been called upon to chronicle the death of one of our old time residents and friends, George Herschel Brown, of Corona, California.

Mr. Brown was born in Danbury, New Hampshire, in 1855 and passed away at his home at Corona, Calif., September 27, 1924. He came to Grinnell in 1884 and this town was his home for 39 years. A year ago he moved to California in the hope of benefitting his health. During all his residence in Grinnell he was recognized as a man of fair dealing, honest and square, and of earnest and unimpeachable character.

Soon after coming to Grinnell he entered the employ of Fred Proctor and for a number of years was manager of what was known as the Fair Store on Main street. In 1894 he formed a partnership with I.M. Harrington and under the name of Brown and Harrington purchased China Hall of Mrs. C.E, Miller in the room now occupied by Bartling & Nuckolls. Later he bought Mr. Harrington's interest and managed the store until failing health caused him to close out the goods and retire from business. In 1889 he was married at Davenport to Miss Mary Ada Olds who with her husband became active in church work and whose friends were numbered only by their acquaintance.

A year ago Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved to Corona, California, and here he lived until his death a few days ago.

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Mary Brown, and his daughter, Mrs. Harold J. Lisle of Corona. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. S.E. Roach of Berkeley, California, and one grand child.

All who knew George Brown recognized him as a kind and generous man, true to every noble instinct, of lovable character and without reproach.
