Dennis N. Holmes, 43, formerly of Gilman, died of a heart attack Monday, Jan. 30, in Virginia Beach, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Laurel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Terri Elder officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Laurel.

A memorial fund is being established, and friends may contact the Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown for additional information.

The son of Norman and Hilda Flocker Holmes Sr., he was born Nov. 26, 1945, in Grinnell. He attended Gilman schools, graduating from high school in 1964.

He was married to Eileen Maytag Dec. 22, 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1984, retiring as a chief petty officer.

Surviving are his wife, Eileen; a son, Norman S. of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Alicia Ann Holmes, also of Virginia Beach; his parents, Hilda Holmes of Gilman and Tee and Fritz Clay of Gilman; a sister, Leslie Onthank, of Cedar Rapids; a half-sister, Regina Elvin of Kentucky; and two brothers, Steven Clay of LeGrand and Michael Clay of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1982.
