Mrs. Alexander Shadbolt, who was stricken two weeks ago Monday with an attack of paralysis from which she never rallied, passed away at her home on East street Sunday. Mrs. Shadbolt came to Grinnell with her son from Chamberlain, S.D., a year ago this fall in order to give Edward an opportunity to enter the college in which his father had been a student and in which he has distinguished himself along musical lines.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the home conducted by Rev. A.L. Curtis of Aberdeen, S.D., a family friend, assisted by Rev. E.M. Vittum. Burial was in Hazelwood.

Mrs. Shadbolt before her marriage was Jennie Elizabeth Grieve, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grieve. Her paternal grandfather, also Thomas Grieve, was a cousin of Thomas Carlyle and came to this country from Scotland largely on the advice of that famous author. Elizabeth was born in Scott county, Iowa, and spent most of her girlhood in Davenport, graduating from high school there as salutatorian of her class and also graduating from the Municipal Normal School in Davenport. She taught in the city schools of Davenport until her marriage to Mr. Shadbolt in March, 1901.

Mr. and Mrs. Shadbolt after their marriage lived for two years on the Van Evera place a mile east of town. When the Citizens National Bank was organized Mr. Shadbolt became associated with it and they moved to Grinnell where they made their home for two years. From there they moved to South Dakota in the spring of 1907 and the family has lived in that state since that time.

Mrs. Shadbolt made many friends in Grinnell during her first residence here who were glad to welcome her upon her return. She had become active in church work and her sudden death will bring sorrow to many.

She is survived by her husband and son and two brothers, Ed Grieve of Brooklyn and John Grieve of Pierson, Iowa. J.B. Lang of this city is an uncle and there are a number of more distant relatives in Madison and Brooklyn.
