SERVICES HELD

Francis W. Thorp, 81, of Marshalltown died Thursday, Sept. 15.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown, with the Rev. Glen Jaspers officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

The son of Oliver and Rosetta Grimes Thorp, he was born July 27, 1907, in Grinnell. He was married to Esther A. Brown of Grinnell Dec. 17, 1936, in Unionville, Mo.

He was raised and educated in Grinnell and moved with his family to Marshalltown in 1942. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

Mr. Thorp was employed by Strand Bakery and Hawkeye Oil Co. until his retirement in 1962. He was a Red Cross volunteer and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1977. He attended Fellowship Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Janet Montgomery and Gerald Thorp of Lee's Summit, Mo., Ronald of Gilbert and Dennis of Plano, Texas; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gertrude Hardman of Marshalltown.
