MARGARET CHILD INK

Margaret Child Ink, at the age of 87, passed away in Rockville, Maryland on May 21, 2012. She had been living independently in her condominium in Gaithersburg. She was born December 5, 1924, in Grinnell, Iowa to Carl and Blanche (Lytle) Child. Margaret graduated from Iowa State University in 1947, majoring in sociology. She married Dwight Ink that year. After graduating, she served as a counselor for troubled children at the Minneapolis Vinc Day Care Center and provided counseling for young women through the YWCA at North Dakota State University before concentrating on raising five children of her own. Margaret and Dwight moved to the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC in 1955.

Margaret played the flute in the Arlington Symphony and with the National Symphony Orchestra for many years, including the NSO's inaugural concert in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in 1971. She also played in Friday Morning Music Club concerts for many years and was a founding member of the Flute Society of Washington. She taught flute and played the piccolo solo in "Stars and Stripes Forever" with the Rockville Band on several Fourth of July concerts.

Margaret worked for the Montgomery County government from 1988 until 2006, including 14 years in the county executive's office. She loved children, music, Ocean City, pets and shopping at malls.

Margaret is survived by her five children, Stephen of San Jose, CA, Bruce of Taylors, SC, Lawrence of Beltsville, MD, Barbara of Hertfordshire, England, Lauri of Minneapolis, MN; her five grandchildren, Brian, Bethany, Michael, Carla and Nicholas; and her great-granddaughter, Cameron.

A memorial service will be held at Kentlands Mansion, 320 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20878 on June 3 at 2 p.m.
