CARL CHILD DIES AT 91

Carl E. Child, 91, a prominent Grinnell banking pioneer, died Wednesday evening at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip J. Ramstad, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational officiating. Organist was Norman Goodbrod.

Pallbearers were Lyman G. Case, John L. Hotchkin, Edward A. McNally, Larry A. Mindrup, R.C. Seeland and Max A. Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Richard E. Dean, Kyle Jones, Charles M. Manly, S.D. Porter, M.D., Mrs. Lucille M. Potts, Stanley D. Preston and Richard Ramsey.

Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Child's name may be made to Grinnell General Hospital.

The son of Frank and Mary Stockwell Child, he was born Jan. 5, 1888, in Grinnell. He attended Grinnell schools, graduating from Grinnell High School in 1904, and also attended Grinnell College.

Mr. Child was recognized last fall by the Iowa Bankers Association as Iowa's "dean of bankers" for 1978-79. He had been associated with banking in Grinnell since 1907.

He began his career as bookkeeper with the former Grinnell Savings Bank on March 8, 1907, and continued with the bank as cashier until Dec. 1, 1919. He accepted a position as cashier with the Citizens National Bank and later became president.

On June 16, 1930, the bank was reorganized and became the Poweshiek County National Bank. Mr. Child served as vice president until Jan. 1 1953. He continued working as vice president and director until Feb. 10, 1978, when he was appointed honorary director.

During his banking career, Mr. Child assumed many community service tasks as treasurer and financial consultant.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion, B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1266, the Knights of Pythias No. 198, and the former Poweshiek Club. He served as city treasurer for many years.

Mr. Child was married to Blanche Lytle on Nov. 26, 1914. The couple had two children.

Survivors include his children, Robert W. Child of Northridge, Calif., and Mrs. Margaret L. Ink of Rockville, Md.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche; his parents; and a brother, Wallace Child, who died in 1920.
