FREDERICK RICHARD SCHWARZ.

Frederick Richard Schwarz was born May 13, 1860, at Kenosha, Wis. His parents were pioneers of this region and he early became accustomed to the rugged life which they lived. He was the second child in a family of nine children of whom two died in infancy, and one brother, S. William Schwarz, together with his father and mother have preceded him to the better world.

In 1877 the family moved to Indiana and settled in Rome, Perry county, where his mother died in 1888. The following year he accompanied his brother, Albert J., to Bellingham, Washington, in a successful attempt to regain the latter's health. Here for several years he helped to clear the land of a now prosperous city of the virgin forest.

Returning to Indiana in 1894 he was united in marriage to Lydia M. Ploch. To this union were born four children, three boys and one girl, the two oldest boys dying in infancy.

In 1894 he came with his family to Iowa, making his home successively at Wapello, Sigourney, Grandview and Grinnell. Here his two surviving children, Benjamin F. and Esther C., received their education, the former graduating from Grinnell College in the Class of 1919, and the latter from Grinnell high school two years later.

About two years ago his health began to fail, and every effort was made to have it restored, but in vain. In December his condition became critical, the trouble developing into valvular heart disease, and he passed away quietly at the new Henry County Hospital at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Thursday evening, January 12.

Early in life he learned to love and serve his Savior, and through all his suffering his faith remained firm. He was for years a loyal and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, being at the time of his death connected with the First Methodist Church of Grinnell.

He leaves to mourn his loss his bereaved wife; one son, Benjamin F., attending the Boston University School of Theology; one daughter, Esther C., of Grinnell; three brothers, Albert J., of Kamiah, Idaho, Henry A., of Flint, Mich., and Louis C., of Canton, S. Dak.; two sisters, Mrs. Justus Sipple of Pasadena, Calif., and Mrs. Daniel H. Harrer of Bay City, Mich., besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from the M.E. Church in Grinnell, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. W.C. Wasser.

Two favorite songs of the deceased were sung by a male quartet composed of Messrs. Askey, Read, Kalar and Phillips, while Milton Dieterich ably assisted with appropriate organ selections. Pall bearers were the teacher and five members of his Sunday school class. Only one brother, Louis G. Schwarz, of Canton, S. Dak., was able to attend the service, arriving in time to be at the bedside two days before death came.

Interment was in the beautiful Hazelwood cemetery at Grinnell. Flowers were many and beautiful, many coming from friends and relatives living at a distance.
