MRS. MELISSA ANN DAVIS

Melissa Ann, daughter of Jesse and Luzena Meredith, was born in Henry county Indiana, April 12, 1848, and died June 23, 1922.

She came with her parents to Lynnville in 1865, where she continued to reside until her death which occurred on the old Meredith homestead in the house built by her father. She was educated in Spiceland Academy and Penn College. She was one of the teachers in the old Lynnville Academy. She was united in marriage to Lewis Davis Sept. 11th, 1875. Mr. Davis departed three years ago this month. To this union two children were born, Orland G. and Luzena. Mrs. Davis was a birthright member of the Friends church, and until her health failed was very active in Christian work. She was clerk of this monthly meeting for 17 years, clerk of the Quarterly Meeting and has been an elder in the church for years. Though not permitted on account of failing health to attend church often during the last few years her interest in the welfare of the church and things of the Kingdom was as great as ever. Mrs. Davis was a refined, cultured, Christian woman whose sweet womanly qualities made her a general favorite and endeared her to all who knew her.

Mr. and Mrs. Davis were Iowa pioneers, identified with the development of Jasper county and did much for the educational and religious development of the community. She leaves to mourn her departure her son and daughter, Orland and Luzena, two sisters and three brothers, one half-sister, three half-brothers and four grandchildren, besides a number of relatives, and a host of friends, all of whom recognize that a patient, faithful wife, gentle, loving, devoted mother and true friend has gone to her reward and after a well-spent fruitful life has entered into that rest that remaineth for the children of God.

The funeral services were held at the Friends Church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. George Wood assisted by Rev. Hanson and Rev. Glenwood Stanley. Music was furnished by a double mixed quartet. Interment was in the Friends cemetery.

The relatives attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Snyder and son, Leonard, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Davis and Miss Edna Freet from Oskaloosa, Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Beans from Minneapolis, Mrs. A.E. Howerton from Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Davis and Rex Hunt from Des Moines and Charles Davis from LeGrand.
