APPROPRIATE GRAVE
SIDE SERVICES
FOR A.L. CHILD

Burial services for A.L. Child, pioneer Grinnell business man, who died January 12 in North Hollywood, Calif., were held Sunday afternoon in Hazelwood cemetery. It was feared at first that the services originally planned for Sunday would have to be postponed on account of the delay occasioned by the flood, but Mr. Child's daughter, Mrs. O.H. Mathews, who accompanied the body here, was able to reach Grinnell so that the service could be held at the appointed time.

The services at the grave were in charge of Rev. Robert Inglis, who led in prayer, and of Dr. E.A. Steiner, who spoke with feeling and eloquence of his friend of many years. A number of intimate friends were present.

Those who were here from out of town, in addition to Mrs. Child and her son R.L. Holyoke and Mrs. Mathews were Mrs. Walter Hammond of Berkeley, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Burns of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Davison of Wapello.

Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, cousins and many old Grinnell friends attended the funeral services which were held for Mr. Child Jan. 13, in a beautiful funeral chapel in North Hollywood. It was extraordinary that such a reunion was possible in California of a family whose roots had been as deeply sunk in Grinnell. Floral offerings, exquisite and suitable music by a string trio provided by Wilbur Hatch, musical director of KNX radio studio, who married Margaret Mathews, Mr. Child's granddaughter, combines with sympathetic remarks by the officiating minister to produce a service of unusual beauty.

Many old friends who had known Mr. Child during his long life in Grinnell welcomed the opportunity afforded by the service Sunday afternoon to say farewell to one whom they had learned to love and appreciate during the passing years.
