LENARD D. HEATH

HOLLAND, MICH. - Lenard D. Heath, age 80, of Holland, Michigan, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Hospice House of Holland. Len was a retired band director and had taught for 39 years in Iowa. He was preceded in death by his first wife Joan Heath, son John Heath, and daughter Mary Heath. After graduating from Lyons High School in Clinton, IA in 1950, Len went on to Iowa State Teacher's College, graduating in 1953. Len served in the United States Army from January 1954 until January 1956. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, the entire time, playing the sousaphone in the 6th Armored Band. He married Joan Ryan of Brooklyn, IA at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on September 22, 1954. Together they were blessed with five children, John, Jim, Tom, Mary and Anne. Len worked as a teacher and band instructor in Iowa from 1956 until 1993. He received his Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of South Dakota in 1962. Len was also involved with the Iowa state Education Association. Joan died on July 26, 1987. Len married Judy (Jordan) Brock on August 4, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Holland. Holland was their home during the summer months and Mesa, AZ during the winter months. Together they loved to travel all over the US driving their motor home. Len was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Holland. Surviving are his wife Judy Heath of Holland, children: Jim Heath of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tom Heath of Iowa City, Anne Heath and Adam Diab of Warrenville, Ill., grandson Adam Heath. Also surviving are step children: Bob and Laurie Brock of Holland, Brian Brock and David Staskowski of Berwyn, Ill. and Brad and Becky Brock of Mesa, AZ, five step grandchildren and one step great grandson. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 28th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa, preceded by a visitation at 9:30 a.m. Officiating will be Len's brother-in-law, Rev. Philip V. Ryan of Brooklyn. Per Len's wishes, his body was donated to Michigan State University Medical School.
