DANIEL VOECKS SR., 67

Daniel M. Voecks, Sr., 67, Montezuma, died Tuesday, Jan 22, 2002, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, from complications of a brain tumor.

A funeral was Saturday, Jan. 26, at United Methodist Church, Montezuma. The body was cremated and a private burial of ashes was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma. Arrangements are by Dunn's Funeral Home, Des Moines. Memorials are to the American Brain Tumor Association.

Daniel was born in Waverly. He lived in Des Moines for more than 40 years, and for the last 25 years, he also had a home in Montezuma. Upon retirement in 1999, he moved to Montezuma full-time.

Daniel was the president, CEO and chairman of the board of Homesteaders Insurance Company. He served in the U.S. Army during peacetime.

He belonged to United Methodist Church, where he also was a founding member of Klowns 4 Heaven's Sake. He also was a former member of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church in Des Moines. He was past president of the Iowa Special Olympics and past president and board member of the Embassy Club. He belonged to the Rotary and Des Moines Men's Garden clubs. He enjoyed gardening, playing the card game hearts, and being with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Voecks of Montezuma; a son, Daniel Voecks Jr. of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Elizabeth Dunsmore of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a brother, Albert Voecks of Nashville, Tenn.
