DANIEL J. HERTER DEAD.

Long Engaged in Marble Business in
Grinnell and Marshalltown.

Daniel J. Herter, for twenty years engaged in the marble business at Grinnell and for the last four years a member of the firm of Herter & Leins, of this city, died at the Deaconess hospital at 5:20 o'clock this morning of neuritis, following a long illness. Mr. Herter had been in failing health for two years, and had been confined to his bed for five weeks. Three weeks ago Saturday he submitted to the amputation of his foot, to relieve a gangrenous condition.

Mr. Herter was born in Huntington, Ind., September 24, 1861. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1869, settling near Montezuma. He was united in marriage October 7, 1882, with Miss Lena Leins, at Montezuma.

Mr. and Mrs. Herter spent all their married life, with the exception of two years in West Bend, Ind., as residents of Iowa. Mr. Herter was in the marble business in Grinnell for twenty years, and came to this city four years ago to engage in the same business. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Herter, of Deep River; three daughters, Ella M. Herter, of Des Moines; Mrs. George Johnson of this city; and Mrs. H.A. Spooner, of Baxter; five brothers, Theodore Herter, of Cedar Rapids; Henry Herter, of Hawarden; William and Fred Herter, of Deep River; and (sisters) Mrs. Lydia Crouse, and Mrs. A.W. Smith, of Montezuma.

Mr. Herter was a member of the W.O.W., M.W.A. and Yeoman lodges of this city, and of the I.O.O.F. at Grinnell.

Funeral services were held from his home at 2 o'clock Thursday. The funeral was private.
