LOIS MONROE

Lois J. Monroe, 59, of Ossian, the mother of Julienne Smith of Grinnell, died Thursday, July 9, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Funeral services were conducted July 13 at the First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, with the Rev. Roger McKinstry officiating. Burial was in First Lutheran Cemetery.

The daughter of Leo B. and Julia Quass Peterson, she was born May 2, 1933, in rural Ossian.

She was a graduate of West Union High School and Iowa State Teachers College.

On Sept. 2, 1951, she was married to Virgil Dean Monroe. The couple lived on a farm south of Ossian.

Mrs. Monroe taught in the Dover Township Schools for three years, later serving for 12 years as a substitute teacher in area schools.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, served as a Sunday school teacher and organist for several years and was a member of the A.L.C.W., Ruth Circle and the Dover No. 6 Historical Society.

Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Julienne Smith of Grinnell; five sons, Leo of Ossian, LeVirgil of Clermont, Leland of Ossian, Layne of Johnston and Jeffrey of Ossian; three sisters, Audrey Vagts of West Union, Marjorie Borseth of Decorah and Judy Ehler of Ossian; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jayne, in infancy and her mother.
