THEODORE H. BARKEMA

Theodore H. Berkema, 74, of 527 Spring St., died of heart and renal failure Tuesday at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce W. Fuerbach of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner and vocalists were Ruth Ann Dayton and Wilma Schmitz.

Pallbearers were Mike Beatty, Brent and Brian Eilander, Ted and Tracy McCammant and Terry Yenger. Honorary bearers were Dr. John DeMeulenaere, Jim George, Berkley Gould and Jim McKenna. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma.

The son of Hauko and Grace Lieuwen Barkema, he was born March 3, 1916, at Meservey, Iowa, where he attended school. He came to Grinnell in 1930 and worked as a farmhand.

He was married to Alice Figland McCammant Aug. 30, 1949, in Garner.

Mr. Barkema was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a technical sergeant. Following his discharge, he worked for the One Minute factory in Kellogg, the York Lumber yard and Vosburg Building Center, retiring in 1978.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Eilander of Albia and Janet and Judy McCammant of Burlington; his stepmother, Nellie Barkema of Belmond; four brothers, Harvey of Forest City, Mervin of Klemme, Leo of Mason City and Bud of Belmond; two sisters, Marvel Stadtlander of Sheffield and Jean Ostendorf of Klemme; a stepsister, Arlene Swenson of Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Gary; an infant sister and four half-brothers, Ted, Herman, Cortland and Phillip Dorencamp.
