MELVIN M. MILLS, 71

Melvin M. Mills, 71, long time resident of Montezuma, passed away March 17, 1995, in Phoenix, Ariz., following a brief illness.

Cremation has been accorded and burial was in Rock Island National Cemetery in Illinois. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 23, 1995, at 11:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Montezuma.

Mel, as his friends called him, was a retired Navy CPO of 24 years active duty. He participated in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam prior to his retirement. Upon retirement he settled in Montezuma where he became a successful contractor and politician. He was elected Poweshiek County Treasurer in 1976. He diligently served the people of Poweshiek County for the next 16 years, being re-elected for three terms. During his term as Treasurer, he was elected President of the State Treasurers Association from 1986-1988.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 40 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Kaaba Shrine Temple in Davenport. He was a 31 year member of O.E.S. and a Past Patron. He was also a member of the Montezuma Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Virginia; one son, Thomas Lee and his wife, Mary of Burkburnett, Texas; and three grandchildren: John C. of Columbia, Mo., Christin Ann and Sarah Marie of Burkburnett; six sisters and brothers

Memorials may be made to Convalescent Endowment Fund, Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital in care of Virginia Mills, Montezuma.
