FUNERAL OF E.M.T.
COX HELD AT EWART

The following obituary was read at the funeral of E.M.T. Cox who died at his home in Ewart, Wednesday, April 1, 1925.

Ernest Monroe Tilden Cox, son of Alexander R. and Nancy Wilson Cox, was born October 30, 1876, near Moore's Station, in Poweshiek County, Iowa. At the time of his death in Ewart, Iowa, April 1, 1925, his age was therefore 48 years, 5 months and 1 day. His early life was spent mostly in either Mahaska or Poweshiek county, Iowa.

At the age of 26, January 28, 1903, he was married to Miss Maggie J. Hamilton. For about one year, their home was in Montezuma. Then, for eight years on a farm near Ewart. In 1911, they moved into Ewart, where they made their home continuously till he passed away at 8:20 on the evening of April 1, 1925.

Seven children were born into this family. All of them are still living. The death of the husband and father was the first break in the family circle. The children who with their mother are left to mourn their loss are Mrs. Sadie Irene Blain, whose home is near Oskaloosa, Iowa; Leona Mae, Mildred Ada, Harold Hamilton, Hazel Anna, Helen Margaret, and Pauline Emily.

He was one of a family of eight brothers. One of the eight died in infancy. The other six are here today. They are: William Frederic, of Des Moines; Herman H. of Montezuma; John W., and James A., of Ewart; Walter E., and Rolla A., of Montezuma. The father and mother have both passed into the Great Beyond.

He never was disposed to seek public office, but did his duty as a peace officer and member of the school board when called on by his fellow citizens. In connection with a revival in 1915, he became a member of the Ewart United Presbyterian church, and had arranged to be one of the charter members of the new Grange organization at Ewart. But his last illness prevented his presence at the meeting place.

The whole Ewart community is deeply moved by his sudden death. In an unusual degree the sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved family.

The funeral was held at the Ewart church Friday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. R.F. Lackey, pastor of the church. A quartette composed of Mrs. C.L. Braley, Mrs. Leo Farley, Rev. E.W. Gregson and Charles Gerard sang beautifully three appropriate selections, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Alma McMeekin. The attendance was larger than on any other occasion since the new church was built. Burial was in the Ewart cemetery.
