LELA M. STENGEL, 80

Lela M. Stengel, 80, of Deep River, died suddenly on Friday, July 29, 2005, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Her memorial service was Monday, Aug. 1, at the United Methodist Church, Montezuma, with the Rev. Joann Hary officiating. Interment of cremains will occur later at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, Colo. Arrangements were handled by Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma.

Lela was born June 25, 1925, at Colorado Springs, Colo., the daughter of Henry and Eva (Elliott) Magee. On June 6, 1948, she was united in marriage with John Stengel at the Congregational Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. To this union, three children were born. Lela and John spent most of their lives in Lyndhurst, N.J., where Lela was a homemaker. She also served as office manager for Morris Saraski Paper Merchant. Lela always led a very active life. She was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, and was a lay speaker in the Methodist church and was a life member of the United Methodist Women. In her early years she served with the Red Cross in Colorado Springs, and received an award for arranging member services for men in war. She served on the board of directors and was secretary to the board of Southwest Teller County Hospital District in Cripple Creek, Colo.

Lela is survived by her husband of 57 years, John, of Deep River, and their family, a son and his wife, John Jr. and Carla Stengel of Xenia, Ohio; two daughters, Janet Stengel of Columbus, Ohio, and Judith and her husband, Dennis Johnston of Deep River; six grandchildren: Erin Stengel, John Elliott Stengel and Michael, Jennifer, Denise and Laura Johnston; one sister, Anna Magee. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
