ELEANOR FRANK

Eleanor Gunther Starke Frank, 89, of the Mayflower Home died Wednesday at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center.

In lieu of funeral services, the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home. The body has been cremated.

The daughter of Albert Gustau and Jane Laura Jackson Starke, she was born July 29, 1901, on a farm near Boonville, N.Y. She attended New York Collegiate Institute, now Ms. Schoonmaker's School for Girls in New York. She received her B.A. degree from Barnard College in 1922.

During World War I, and prior to her graduation, she served as a volunteer in the Red Cross Motor Corps, driving and repairing ambulances. During World War II, she also served as a volunteer with the Women's Volunteer Services. She also was an air-raid warden in Washington, D.C., during the war.

She was married to Bryan Mann Battey June 23, 1923, at Oscawana-on-Hudson, N.Y. Mr. Battey died in 1936.

She was married to Howard Henry Frank in 1945 in Washington, D.C. Following the war, she and her husband came to Oskaloosa and purchased the Home Oil Co., a distributor of Texaco products. Mrs. Frank had lived at the Mayflower Home here since 1984.

She was a homemaker and a member of the D.A.R., Chapter I.O. of P.E.O. and the Church of Christ, Scientist, all in Oskaloosa.

Surviving are three sons, Brian Mann Battey of Pompano Beach, Fla., Fraser Jackson Battey of McLean, Va., and Lawrence "Bo" Battey of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, George A.S. Starke of East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Hamilton Jackson Starke, and a half-brother, William Belknap Jr.
