MRS. FANNIE HOLMES

Mrs. Fannie E. Holmes died in her 92nd year, at the home of her son, Charles H. Holmes, 917 North Wilson Ave., Alhambra, California, with whom she had resided for the past four years. Her death, which occurred July 3rd, followed an illness of fourteen months in bed, prior to which time she was helpless for the past four years, caused by a fall while in Grinnell, evidently due to a slight stroke.

The funeral services were held at the undertaking parlors at Turner, Stevens & Turner, Alhambra, California, at 3 o'clock p.m., July 5th, 1923, followed by cremation, preparatory to interment at Grinnell.

Mrs. Holmes was born in Washington County, New York, on May 12th, 1832; was married to William H. Holmes of Greenwich, New York, in 1850, where the family comprising Mr. and Mrs. Holmes and their four sons lived thirty years; thence moved to Grinnell, where she resided about forty years, and at which place her husband died and was buried, in October, 1885.

She is survived by two sons, Frank (?) Holmes, of Omaha, Neb., and Charles H. Holmes, Alhambra, California; also a sister, Mrs. Julia B. Hill, of Cambridge, New York.

Mrs. Holmes united with the Dutch Reformed Church of Greenwich when seventeen years of age, and at the time of her death was a member of the Congregational Church of Grinnell, where she had been active in church and literary circles for many years; having a good constitution, she was strong mentally and physically until about six years ago, when she had a fall, and while she had not recently suffered from its effects, she had been practically helpless since being taken to Alhambra, four years ago. Hence, because of her advanced age, the end was not unexpected.

The services were conducted by Dr. W.E. Fulton of the First Presbyterian church. An abundance of rare flowers banked the casket, tributes from personal friends of the family, also beautiful set pieces from the officers of the church, the Missionary Society, the Satira class and the Men's Bible Class of Alhambra.

Former residents of Grinnell present at the funeral were: Mrs. Sara Phillips Holmes, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest L. Phillips, Mrs. Grace Phillips Newhall, Miss Ella Cravath of Los Angeles, Miss Mary Lombard of Pasadena, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Woodworth of Garden Grove, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Holmes.
