MR. HOLMES SERVICES HELD

Eugene Fremont Holmes, 96, of Grinnell, formerly of Newton, died Monday morning at Friendship Manor.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip J. Ramstad, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud. Pallbearers will be Craig Peters, Richard Peters, Rick Peters, Roger Peters, Stephen Peters, and Orville Robison. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Fremont and Carolyn Gross Holmes, he was born Aug. 5, 1882, in Chester Township north of Grinnell. Following the death of his parents, he lived in the home of his grandparents, John and Anne Holmes of Grinnell. He attended schools in Grinnell, later attending the Delhi Academy in New York.

On Oct. 11, 1911, he was married to Agnes McKee in Grinnell. The couple lived in Chicago for one year, returning to Rock Creek Township west of Grinnell to farm until 1926 when they moved to Grinnell.

Mr. Holmes was a monument salesman and later was self-employed as a carpenter and handyman. He was a charter member of the Victor Grange and was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Earl (Lois) Peters of Newton, two grandsons, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and one brother, Floyd Holmes.
