Feb. 13, 1984RITES HELD FOR MRS. WATSON
Mabel L. Watson, 72, of Rte. 1, Searsboro, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Mercy Hospital in Davenport.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Searsboro Friends Church, with the Rev. Irene Weitert, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist was Lila Faust.
Pallbearers were Larry Niswander, Tom Robertson, Charles Watson, Freddy Watson, Richard Watson and Raymond Watson.
Burial was in the West Liberty Cemetery near Searsboro, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials in Mrs. Watson's name may be made to Hospice Grinnell.
The daughter of Claudius and Lorena Salliday McGrew, she was born Oct. 25, 1911, at Bloomfield. She attended rural school in Davis County and later moved with her family to Udell, where she graduated from high school. She received her teacher's certificate from Iowa State University. She had taught at Searsboro, Troy and Pulaski.
On May 21, 1939, she was married to Alvah Watson at Udell. The couple moved to a farm northeast of Searsboro. Mrs. Watson worked as a cook at Community Hospital here and later was employed at DeLong Sportswear. She then returned to teaching in Poweshiek County and Grinnell. She was a member of the Friends Church of Searsboro.
Survivors include her husband, Alvah; her daughters, Mary Bruner and Leora Blackwood, both of Bettendorf; six grandchildren; and her sister, Edna Rowe of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Watson, and her parents.
